The Persuasion of Green
September 5th, 2007 BrunetteAs a final attempt to hopefully pull off at least a passing grade in my oral communications class, I had to do a persuasive speech. I hate trying to find topics, but I chose to persuade my viewers to become “Green” and change from regular incandescent light bulbs to CFLs.
OK, you might be wondering, “WTF are you talking about?” Well, I needed something to talk about, why not talk about persuading them to save money, save energy, and save the environment. I jumped on the band wagon several months ago because I was broke and needed to save some money, but in researching my speech I was really surprised by all the other benefits.
And, NO, this is not a paid post and I was not asked to do it. I just thought I would share some things I found out and if it helps you save on your budget, our energy, and our environment, why not share it? You might actually take my advice.
My purpose of changing to CFLs was reducing my monthly electric bill. It was outrageous! A friend suggested I make the bulb change because it could reduce my bill around $40 per month. No brainer there!
I changed every light bulb in my house. After tracking two months worth of bills, I saved about $60 per month on my electricity due to the bulb change. WOW!
Yes, CFLs are a bit more expensive, but will pay for themselves in no time. According to the web sites I visited, CFLs last 10 times longer then regular incandescent light bulbs and use 2/3 less energy. So, I made a cost and energy efficient change and even made an environmental impact without even knowing. Take a look below at some WOW factors and you might as well take a peak at the web sites!
Quick Facts from GreenLightsUSA:
- If every American home replaced just one incandescent light bulb with a CFL, we’d save enough energy to light 2.5 million homes for a year and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of nearly 800,000 cars.
- Every year, 106 billion pounds of preventable pollution is generated to power older-generation light bulbs. These incandescent bulbs use 4 times more energy than necessary to produce the light for your homes and businesses.
