moon wonder

July 8th, 2008 Brunette

I survived MONDAY!!!

I thought there was no way my dragging butt was gonna get through it, but I did, I’m here! The only thing off about today so far… rain. It is raining, so if you want it, take it. It’s free!

HAHAHA! Oh that’s funny. I’m writing this post and looking out the window as some idiot driver turns the corner, clearly has time to see their is a garden-type island in the parking lot and drives right up on it. Must have done something because he doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. And I’m the one that has to go to defensive driving class!

Ahhh… the joys of having a nice big window to watch the world. And, I often wonder, “What the heck was that person thinking?”

So, back to my Monday.

To cap off the night, Miss K asked me this questions, “Do they make moon block?”

Now mind you I was writing up an article since she was actually suppose to be in bed, so I really didn’t catch what she said.

“Now, what did you ask?”

She said it again, “Do they make moon block?”

“Moon block? What do you mean baby?”

She looks at me with her hands moving all over - hand talker # 2 in our family - “You know. They make sun block for you in the sun. Do they make moon block for you at night?”

And that made my Monday :)

bye, bye cell

June 6th, 2008 Brunette

My son is 12 going on 8 I sometimes think. I mean this is no joke. I sometimes think he is going back in age on some very basic things that he knew just fine a year ago. It frustrates me to no end to have to rewind and repeat basically everything that I say to him.

Well, the lovely cell phone bill came in the mail and I FREAKED! There were over $70.00 worth of charges for Internet, music, and just crap. You name it and it was on the bill. So, now all of the Internet is OFF for my son. He can use his cell for what is what designed for - to make calls.

He swears it is because the side buttons keep catching and dialing stuff on their own. Well, I could believe that if the side buttons weren’t only for column control. I mean I have the same freaking phone as him - I’m not stupid, I know how to use it!

He is responsible for the charges which means mom gets some work around the house that is not in his normal chore / routine. I am gonna work his butt off for that $70.00 worth of crap. He just doesn’t get the struggle we go through with the economy right now.

Well, his ass will understand over the next month!

I’m not gonna be mean, or work him like a dog. But he will work and he will come out of this a new guy with a clearer understanding of how life works.

Reminds me of my poor friend. He and his wife are struggling with his son from a first marriage. Apparently, his ex-wife is not paying attention to the cell phone usage and his son has racked up about $900 worth of 900 calls. A 15 year old calling “love” numbers. Oh, WOW!

Not quite sure how that got resolved trying to pay it off, but the son no longer has a phone and won’t get it back from what I hear. This is not his first time with trying to get long-distance love. There is no way I could keep calm if my son did that!

Wish me luck!

Kids and Back to School

March 26th, 2008 Brunette

Spring Break for my kiddos was last week. They stayed up late, they partied harder than mom, and now they hate returning to school. OK, so I was lax over the week, it was Spring Break for heaven’s sake., but no one can get back into the groove now. Tired and cranky is how the past few mornings have been, but usually once up, Miss K is ready to go. Not Mr C.

Sluggish and tired; no get-up and go, we all are still on Spring Break and want to sleep in, do what we want and forget time exists. Then I wake up from that day dream and realize we are in the real world again and sleeping in is a thing of the past. OK, I guess schedules win.

Today was just funny to hear nothing but, “I’m too tired to wake up.” ” No, I’m not going to school.” “Please don’t make me go!” Oh how I love the sound of tired in the morning, that means they will fall asleep at least on time, if not earlier, for bed tonight. Know what that means for mom? :) Yea, getting to go to bed early too! Hmm, what did you think I meant?

Her Sport is Not Basketball

February 4th, 2008 Brunette

Miss K… hmm… what can I say, she struggles every practice and at every game, but she loves to do it. Basketball is just not her sport. Now, it is her first year playing organized basketball, just not the family driveway basketball we normally play, so I completely understand she is still learning, but I have seen the other first-time players progressively getting better with each practice and game, not my Miss K.

She stands and twirls and skips down the court, yes it can be very cute, just never very basketball-like. Thankfully her coach is only worried about one thing - dribbling. Well, honestly, her dribbling would be a lot better if she would stop skipping. That darn skipping gets her every time.

I believe with Miss K, she goes more for the friendship and seeing the other girls then she does to actually play the sport. You know what, that is completely fine. I will continue to fire up the shiny red ride to continue driving her to every practice and game as long as she wants because I believe the camaraderie is just as important as the sport. Hopefully though, one day basketball will click for her.

The only other organized anything she has tried is Ballet and she really liked it when they got to do “ballet” moves - basically she hated learning the techniques - first position, second position, and so on. I supported her and explained that you had to learn the techniques in order to put it all together. After two years, I gave her the choice to continue and she clearly told me “No.” Well, last month she asked, “Mom, when do I go to ballet again?” WHAT?

Kids can be so confusing. Anyway, I will wait patiently for the next sport she wants to tackle, whatever that may be. I will keep taxing her around to which ever sport is in-season for her, all with the hope that Miss K will find the click - the one that makes sense to her. If none do, I will still support her for at least trying.

The House is Not on Fire

February 1st, 2008 Brunette

All I heard was my daughter screaming, “Mom the house is on fire!” Here I am running into the kitchen trying to figure out what the heck is going on while smoke just pours from the microwave. I realized one thing very quickly -NEVER - let a 12 year old use the microwave without having listened to all of the directions first.

So, lunch time rolls around in our place and both of the kids want to have mac-n-cheese with their lunch.  OK, not a problem. Well they like those microwavable kind that are all individual, just made for them. As my daughter sits down to eat her lunch, I begin to make a mac-n-cheese for my son when he so adult-like states, “I can do it mom.” OK, fine, I begin to tell him the directions. “I know, I know.” You know how 12 year olds are. Well, he knew, he put the container in the microwave and I went off to use the bathroom.

Why is it that EVERYTHING happens when the mom is in the bathroom? Anyway, my daughter begins screaming, I’m trying to get put back together from using the bathroom and run to the kitchen all at once. The smell of burnt popcorn is just billowing throughout the house now. What? Popcorn? He didn’t make popcorn! Well, not popcorn, but the melted container of mac-n-cheese, burnt to the turntable because my son forgot to add the water, but remember, he knew. It was still my fault for not forcing the directions on him, but he has made them before, so I never in a million years would have guessed the one thing he would forget - to add water.

So, the burnt container is now laying underneath the snow that has fallen here in NW Arkansas. I was trying to think of something quick to get it out of the house - throwing it outside was a good option at the time.  My house SMELLS. I froze everyone out with the doors open along with the windows, but the smell is still lingering. But, that burnt smell is most likely helped by the fact that when I turned on our DVR later in the day, it too burnt out and the smell from that burn - toxic! OMG, my house smell is just grotesque. If a house could have BO smell, mine does!

So, the microwave makes everything stink, my house smells gross, and I am down my shows for the week thanks to the burnt DVR - doesn’t really matter the shows were most likely reruns anyway. We are thankful that the house really did not burn. So that is how I spent my Thursday, at home, snowed in with the kiddos!

No Christmas for You

December 22nd, 2007 Brunette

There are going to be some parents out there that might find this appalling, but as I sit here writing this I am really thinking about telling my twelve year old that there will be no Christmas for him.  Yes, it might seem drastic, but what other way do I get through?

He has been very disrespectful; talking back, calling names, hollering, cruel to his sister, the list goes on.  I have worked with him to take somereposnsiblity for is actions and behaviour, but there are many times you can see, he doesn’t really care.  I have tried rewards & consequences, taking things away, grounding, again a continual list o parenting tools, bu none are working.

I am at my wits end with him and when I put my kiddos to sleep tonight, I thought about just not giving him Christmas.  Does he deserve Christmas this year?  Right now sitting here, pissed, I say no.  I might see the situation different tomorrow.  I also think not having Christmas might be a wake up call.
